A foreword MMC for Roads and Transport Cllr Joyce Mashishi-Ntsime
Rustenburg, South Africa’s fastest growing City since the dawn of democracy is standing on the cusp of history. What an exciting time to be alive as the Rustenburg Local Municipality is moving full steam ahead towards the provision of a safe and more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system in the City. An effective transport system is vital to society’s way of life as it connects people with jobs, schools, shops, friends and family.
Yarona™ the City’s bus rapid transport (BRT) system is set to spur economic development and ensure sustainable job creation. Yarona™ is also a viable option for mobility as the system will also help ease congestion, reduce the impact on the environment and support the development of Rustenburg as a sustainable city.
Yarona™ is the official name of Rustenburg’s new integrated public transport system. The name derives from the Setswana “Ke Ya Rona” meaning “It is Ours.” The Project will surely bring transformation to the people of Rustenburg and the City by providing sustainable world-class public transport services.
The month of October, was declared Transport Month in 2005 during the Transport Lekgotla – it is important for us to zoom-in on Yarona™ and Road Safety. October Transport Month (OTM) is used to raise awareness on the important role of transport in the economy and to encourage participation from civil society and business, including the provision of a safe and more affordable, accessible and reliable transport system in the country. The month is also used to engage in extensive campaigns showcasing progress achieved in various transport programmes and Projects.
